In a statement released on Friday, GOP House Minority leader Kevin McCarthy demands Adam Schiff recuse himself from the intelligence panel's Russia investigation.
Given Chairman Schiff’s previous underlying rationale when calling for others to recuse themselves from Russia-related investigations, in order to avoid charges of hypocrisy or perceived bias, should Chairman Schiff recuse himself from his intended investigations after meeting with a witness of an ongoing investigation? McCarthy asked.
This was in response to Schiffs suspicious meeting with Fusion GPS Glenn Simpson in July 2018 at the Aspen Security Forum. Gleen Simpson, a Russian-American Lobbyist and a man holding a pivotal role in the Russian Collusion investigation, also never mentioned he had met the Dem. Chairman Adam Schiff before now. On febuary 7th, a spokesman of Schiffs told The Hill,
"The chairman did not have any pre-planned meeting with Glenn Simpson, and any conversation with him at the Aspen conference would have been brief and social in nature".
McCarthy also went ahead to explain in details, previous rationale of Schiffs. That which includes his call for recuse for the then-Chairman Devin Nunes after holding an undisclosed meetings with White House officials and also that of then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions, whom Schiff demanded he recuse himself from the Russia investigation after he failed to disclose a meeting he had with a Russian diplomat.
McCarthy stated that "the American people would be well-served if Chairman Schiff answered a few questions on the interaction before the committee moves forward with their investigations, to ensure that these investigations are pursued in a fair manner."
